Trump interviews Amul Thapar for U.S

Collins walks outside the Senate chamber on Capitol Hill in Washington

Collins met with Trump to tell him she would not back some of the candidates on his short list and pressed him to expand his picks.

With Republicans controlling the Senate 51 to 49, Democrats must prevent any defections and win over at least one Republican if they hope to block a nominee.

"I'm going to have an in-depth discussion with the nominee and I believe very much that Roe v. Wade is settled law, as it has been described by Chief Justice Roberts".

Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Arkansas, has called the President to express concerns about Judge Brett Kavanaugh, who sits on the federal appeals court and is a veteran of the Bush White House. As is detailed in powerful supporting letters from the entire Notre Dame Law School faculty, from every living clerk who worked with her at the Supreme Court, from an ideologically and methodologically diverse array of prominent legal scholars, and from hundreds of her former students, she is a respected scholar, an award-winning teacher, a razor-sharp lawyer, a disciplined and diligent jurist, and a person of the highest character. Such an important decision and we're going to give you a great one.

Prior to that, he served in private practice and clerked for Sixth Circuit Court Judge Ralph Guy and U.S. Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy, according to a biography from white House archives. There were the four interviews Monday, as well as a conversation with Republican Sen. He's a law-and-order conservative in the mold of Associate Justice Samuel Alito, who came from the same appeals court.

He served as a federal trial judge in the Western District of Pennsylvania for four years before joining the appeals court.

That is because, on June 27, after more than thirty years at the center of numerous Supreme Court's most famous (and infamous) decisions, Justice Anthony M. Kennedy announced his retirement. They see an opportunity now with Trump in the White House. Mr. Trump might want to turn the tables on his liberal opponents who consider his policies not in the interest of women and minorities by nominating a woman or a member of a minority group.

"The president said he would make his mind up on Monday and make the announcement. he may make it before then", Gidley said.

Paul's office did not respond to requests for comment.

Kennedy is a conservative but has at times sided with the liberals on the court in key decisions, including decisions on the death penalty, abortion, and same-sex marriage. He also pointed to Barrett's past statements on the Affordable Care Act and contraception.

On Sunday, Leonard Leo, an outside adviser to Trump on judicial nominations, said he expected Trump to select a nominee who is mindful of precedent but who is also more "originalist and textualist". That's according to a person with knowledge of the meetings who was not authorized to speak publicly about them.

The task is further complicated by the status of Republican Senator John McCain, a war hero and former Republican presidential nominee.

But Trump's potential picks have a sharp divide between those with a long service on the circuit courts and those who are brand new, setting up what could be very different confirmation battles in terms of the contours of the fight. Kennedy could also sit as a visiting judge on other courts.

His departure means President Trump will now have another opportunity to nominate a judge to the highest court in the U.S. His first appointment, Justice Neil Gorsuch was confirmed in April 2017. Kethledge, a Michigan Law graduate, would add academic diversity to a court steeped in the Ivy League.
