Roger Federer stunned at Wimbledon as Kevin Anderson sinks the champion

Kevin Anderson recovered from two sets and a match point down to complete a remarkable men's singles quarter-finals victory over defending champion Roger Federer at Wimbledon today.

The eight-time champion was two sets up and had a match point in the third, but nearly three hours later he trudged off on the end of a seismic 2-6 6-7 (5/7) 7-5 6-4 13-11 upset.

Or was it the court?

The 20-time Grand Slam champion appeared to be moving towards his 5th successive Wimbledon semifinal after taking the opening two sets.

Federer, 36, breezed through the opening set in just 26 minutes, had a match point in the third set and was just two points from victory a couple of times in the epic fifth set that lasted 90 minutes.

Federer's serve had been untouched in the tournament until Anderson, who won just one receiving points in the opener, took it in the second game of the second set.

The tide changed slightly in the second set as Anderson came out firing to become the first man to break the Federer serve in this tournament.

And he didn't stop there.

But this time Federer cracked, serving his first double fault at 11-11 in the decider to give Anderson the crucial break that ushered the Swiss to the exit door.

Federer had his chances and won one more point in the set than Anderson did.

"I just kept telling myself to keep believing and that today it would be my day, that's the mindset you need against someone like Roger".

Federer was attempting to reach his 13th semi-final at Wimbledon and move closer to title number nine, both of which would have broken his own records.

"He claims that he didn't see what Nishikori has done, but apparently he always sees what I do", Djokovic said afterward, "something that I don't think is fair".

Not quite to the same extent as Anderson, but Djokovic too was forced to improve as his meeting with Nishikori raged on, particularly after the 24th seed showed a sturdier response to level after two sets. "Especially after his win in Miami, sort of just seeing him around, watching him play matches on the practice court, I think he has a lot of confidence right now which allows him to be a bit more free from the baseline, from the back", Anderson continued. "That's the worst feeling you can have as a tennis player".

"John I think has got arguably one of the best serves of all time on the tour". I just don't know exactly how I couldn't create more opportunities once the third set came around.

The 36-year-old had won the first set in just 26 minutes, but was left stunned as Anderson clawed his way back into the match from a seemingly lost position.

Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. The Spanish ace, who has reached this stage for the first time since 2011, will be facing Novak Djokovic, who disposed of Kei Nishikori in his quarter-final outing. I've been in many, many matches like this.

Others still in the running for this year's men's singles title include Spanish star Rafael Nadal and Argentina's Juan Martin Del Potro, now duking it out in their own quarterfinal.

'Obviously that helps knowing what time you get out on the court.

Yet Anderson, the eighth seed, was meant to pose a far greater threat to Federer than his previous four opponents, and so it proved.

Roger Federer has played his first Wimbledon point away from Centre Court since 2015.

"I wouldn't call it unfinished business", he said.
