World stocks mixed under pressure of more United States tariffs

Asian markets fall as China US ready for more tariffs

After the interview, Trump reiterated criticism of the Federal Reserve's planned interest-rate hikes, posting on Twitter that the tightening policy would diminish any US trade advantage and exacerbate losses from "BAD trade deals".

During a CNBC interview on Friday, President Donald Trump has said that he's "not happy" with the Federal Reserve raising interest rates, and that he thinks doing so undermines any work he does for the economy.

President Donald Trump said he's ready to hit all goods imported from China with tariffs, sending USA markets sliding before the opening bell.

US President Donald Trump on Friday said he was ready to slap punitive tariffs on all Chinese imports. Tariffs on another $16 billion of electronics and components are scheduled and the Trump administration has threatened to target another $200 billion of Chinese products with tariffs, a move that would raise prices for Americans and hurt China's economy.

"The [Fed's policy] committee has a mandate to keep inflation low and stable and obtain maximum employment for the USA economy, so people can comment, including the president and other politicians, but it's up to the committee to try to take the best action we can to achieve those objectives", St. Louis Federal Reserve Bank President James Bullard said Friday.

The U.S. president also lamented the strength of the dollar and accused the European Union and China of manipulating their currencies.

Trump had earlier threatened to target up to $550 billion in Chinese products - a figure that exceeds the $524 billion in goods and services China actually shipped to the United States past year. "We have been ripped off by China for a long time".

Why does the Federal Reserve raise interest rates?

I want them to do well.

The president also praised Fed Chairman Jerome Powell as "a very good man".

The Fed has raised rates five times since Trump took office in January 2017, and has penciled in two more hikes for this year.

Trump supporters eager to get their hands on Trump-themed shirts and hats may have to wait more than they normally would have - and it's all thanks to the president's tariffs. "I said, "How did this ever happen?' ...one of the great people of China said, 'There was never anybody to talk to in the United States".

Presidents have historically avoided criticizing the Fed, which is created to be independent from political interference.

CNBC said, "The Fed's independence from political interference has been a hallmark of its existence, so Trump's remarks have little precedent".

Economists say the biggest risk to America's economic growth are Trump's own policies, especially his imposition of import tariffs on China and Europe as well as allies like Mexico and Canada. "I want them to do well", the U.S. president said of China.

But President Trump broke with that tradition, saying in a CNBC interview, "I'm not thrilled" about the Fed's interest-rate hikes.

"What I saw in that brief excerpt is a president who is going to drive his trade and tariff policy forward regardless of outside objections", McKenna added.
