Roseanne to Sean Hannity on Controversial Tweet: 'It Cost Me Everything'

Roseanne Barr disputes racist claims: 'I'm not that person'

Barr believes that what made the original Roseanne so successful was the fact that it was so relatable.

Actress-comedian Roseanne Barr says her racist tweet "cost her everything" and she wishes she had worded it "better".

In her first in her first televised interview since ABC fired her in May, Roseanne Barr continued to insist, sometimes tearfully, that her controversial tweet about former Obama White House adviser Valerie Jarrett was not racist. But she also expressed pride in the ratings success that the "Roseanne" revival had, saying, "They can't take that away from me no matter what's happened".

But, in an interview with the Fox News Channel's Sean Hannity, Barr claimed: "I didn't know she was African-American". In canceling the show, the network - which is part of the Walt Disney Co. - issued a statement calling it "abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values".

'Well, I kind of think I am, ' Barr said.

"Valerie, let's discuss this", Barr said later, looking at the camera. I never meant that, and for that I apologize.

The hour-long interview also dealt with Barr's mental health; she talked about being hospitalized multiple times and previously suffering from multiple personality disorder. "I mean seriously, she needs a new haircut".

She added that her contract with ABC protected her from any mistakes she were to possibly make.

The entire interview was a lot of rambling, with spots of Barr getting defensive, going off on tangents about Iran, and admitting that when she composed the tweet, she was on Ambien and drinking.

"I'm so sad that anyone thinks that of me", she said, "but I'm not that person".

There was a moment in Sean Hannity's interview tonight with Roseanne Barr when the two seemed like old friends.

This is a developing story.

Co-host Meghan McCain similarly expressed skepticism of embracing Roseanne, and she said the former sitcom star made it harder for her to convince people that Republicans aren't all crazed bigots.

"Plus, I'd tell her she's got to get a new haircut".

Barr told Hannity she felt she was "fighting the right by being really left", referring to her 2012 run for the presidency as a socialist candidate.

"I am sorry that you feel harmed and hurt".

Boteach repeatedly returned to the way that "Martin Luther King Jr., the greatest American of the twentieth century" had forgiven people who had been racist toward him.

In the tweet that led to her firing, Barr compared Jarrett to the offspring of the Muslim Brotherhood and Planet of the Apes characters. The original cast, including John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf and Sara Gilbert, returned.
