No definite time yet for presidential results

Zimbabwe election results Could the opposition party win

Zimbabwe's ruling ZANU-PF party has won the majority seats in parliament, results from the electoral commission showed on Wednesday, a day after the opposition accused the agency of deliberately delaying results in ZANU-PF's favour.

Out of the total 210 constituencies, the commission has released results from 152 constituencies with ZANU-PF winning 109 seats and largest opposition party, MDC Alliance taking only 41.

HARARE, Zimbabwe-The party of former President Robert Mugabe took the majority of seats in Zimbabwe's parliamentary elections, officials said, but European and USA observers expressed reservations about the vote and tensions on the streets of the capital mounted.

Mnangagwa was allegedly involved in violence and intimidation during the 2008 elections when then opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai pulled out of the run-off after attacks claimed the lives of at least 200 of his supporters.

Another member of the opposition, Eveson Matambanadzo, said: "The results we have are cooked if you compare the people who voted on the ground to the results that are there it doesn't tally." .

President Emmerson Mnangagwa meanwhile said he had been talking to opposition leader Nelson Chamisa to try to defuse tension after clashes on the streets of Harare in which troops opened fire on opposition demonstrators, killing three.

"They've rigged these elections".

Zimbabweans desperately hope the peaceful vote, which took place Monday, will lift them out of economic and political stagnation after decades of Mugabe's rule, but the country is haunted by a history of electoral violence and manipulation that means trust is scarce.

However, Douglas Mwonzora, a top MDC Alliance official, told the BBC's Andrew Harding that the endorsement on Sunday of their candidate by Mr Mugabe had cost the party votes.

Through his official Twitter account Mnangagwa said calm should return to the streets through progressive dialogue.

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission has announced it is not yet sure when the commission will announce the results of the presidential election. The events left three people dead.

Partial results from the presidential race were expected Wednesday but in the end there was no announcement.

Mr Chamisa has won most urban centres.

The opposition has alleged irregularities, saying voting results were not posted outside one-fifth of polling stations as required by law. "We're continuing to closely monitor the situation", she said.

"You can't rig our election.this is a military government", the crowd shouted.

However, many analysts have said they expect a win for Mnangagwa, a Zanu-PF veteran who replaced long-time president Robert Mugabe after he was ousted in a military coup in 2017.

The most important thing for us now is to move beyond yesterday's tragic events, and to move forward, together.I am therefore calling for an independent investigation into what occurred in Harare yesterday.

Biti said, given the results he has seen at polling station thus far, he believes it is not possible for Zanu-PF to win the election.
