US will enforce the sanctions against Iran: Mike Pompeo

The Grand Bazaar in Tehran Iran

At the conference, Pompeo lobbied for support from other countries, but the Trump administration's posture on Iran is not popular in several parts of the world because it abandoned a deal that was viewed as largely successful in curtailing Iran's nuclear ambitions.

The US has set a deadline of 4 November for major buyers of Iranian oil to stop their purchases. Since the USA withdrawal from the Iran deal, Iran's currency has taken a nosedive, soaring up to around 120,000 rials to a dollar.

If Iran senses "American steel they back down, if they perceive American mush they push forward - and right now they perceive steel", said Mark Dubowitz, chief executive of Foundation for Defense of Democracies, a Washington think tank that lobbied for a renegotiation of the Iran nuclear deal.

Despite opposition from European allies, Trump in May pulled the United States out of a 2015 deal between world powers and Tehran under which worldwide sanctions were lifted in return for curbs on Iran's nuclear programme.

"You will take to the grave the dream of Iranian officials asking you for a meeting or getting the permission to meet you from their nation". Sanctions will apply to other countries if they help Iran develop nuclear weapons, warned the United States.

Following the US exit, Iran and the remaining parties launched talks to save the accord. "If they want to meet, I'll meet". "That's what America is trying to get Iran to stop doing".

Takht Ravanchi said any compensatory measure by the EU must take place before the USA sanctions, because any European action will be totally useless once the US sanctions come into force and the customers refrain from buying Iran's oil.

Sanctions and diplomatic pressure could pile enough pressure on the regime that it comes to the negotiating table - something Trump has advocated for.

The exercise could shut down of the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial Gulf passage for shipments of numerous commodities.

People in Shiraz, Isfahan, Mashhad, Karaj, Ahvaz, and Rasht joined the protests that started on Tuesday mainly in Karaj and Isfahan over high inflation and unemployment. Since the beginning of 2018, Iranians have been protesting against rising prices, growing power cuts, water shortages and alleged corruption.

IRNA reported that all protests had taken place without official permission and were subsequently broken up by police.

US officials last week said Iran carried out a similar exercise, though Tehran did not immediately acknowledge it.
