A 17-year-old girl was shot in the face and killed, and four more teenagers, with ages ranging from 11 to 17, were wounded, the Sun-Times reported. Police did not reveal how the woman was slain.

The violence peaked early Sunday with several shootings, including one in a courtyard on the city's South Side that injured eight people.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel also called on community members.

Most of the shootings happened over a seven-hour period. He pointed out that so far this year, there has been an overall reduction in shootings.

"What we saw this weekend, it just rips at everything that I believe in because I know as a city and as a neighborhood ... we can do better", he said.

"I promise we will not be defeated", Waller said.

Altogether, between Saturday and Sunday morning, 37 people were shot, three of them fatally, according to the Chicago Tribune. Four other people wounded, one of them critically, and taken to hospitals for treatment.

The crowd had gathered after attending a funeral reception, said Fred Waller, Chicago police chief of patrol. No one was in custody for that shooting.

This year, there have been at least 300 homicides in the city.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel is asking voters to give him a third term when they cast their ballots in February of next year. "There are too many guns on the street, too many people with criminal records on the street, and there is a shortage of values about what is right and what is wrong", he added.

"What Chicago witnessed this weekend was absolutely horrific and should not be tolerated".

Johnson said the police department can not reduce shootings without help from residents identifying the shooters, many of whom are repeat offenders.

West Side pastor Rev. Ira Acree, who was one of the organizers of last week's violence protest and march on the North Side, sent out the following statement: "Sadly, this horrific violence once again illustrates the two Chicagos that now exist".

The spate of shootings left Chicago officials visibly frustrated during a Monday press conference, in which they said gun offenders needed to be held accountable, and they pressed for more community cooperation to stem the crimes.

Former Chicago Police Board President Lori Lightfoot said the city is facing a "public health crisis", and Emanuel "cannot sit this out".

"We work hard with the detective division, we work hard with the states attorney's office to ensure these people, if you do come forward and testify, it's our obligation and responsibility to keep you safe", Johnson said.
