Williams loses game for arguing during US Open loss to Osaka

Naomi Osaka- US Open 2018

Williams defends her integrity after accusations of being coached on-court, calls the umpire "liar " Serena Williams insisted she was not cheating in the US Open final on Saturday before accusing the sport which has made her a global icon and multi-millionaire of sexism.

Twenty three-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams's coach Patrick Mouratoglou has accepted that he was making hand gestures, for which the player was handed a code violation warning in the second set of the controversial US Open final won by Japan's Naomi Osaka in two straight sets 6-2 6-4.

When Ramos called both players over to explain the game penalty, which put Osaka ahead 5-3, Williams began laughing, saying: "Are you kidding me?"

The American star was fined for coaching, racquet abuse and for verbal abuse when she accused umpire Carlos Ramos of being "a thief" during the stormy final.

She was overcome with emotion while on the court for the trophy presentation as fans booed the outcome and supported Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam singles champion who has been vying for Margaret Court's record of 24 Slam singles title. Eventually, Willams called Ramos "a thief", drawing a third violation - and costing her a game.

The American appealed for calm in her runners-up speech, asking her supporters to "give credit" to Osaka's achievement, and the victor was then applauded.

"You owe me an apology", Williams said, adding: "I have never cheated in my life".

With this victory and the manner of it, she has positioned herself as the next big hope to succeed Williams as the dominant force in women's tennis. She was telling me to think of it as just another match and then I would yell at her, 'Are you insane?

Osaka's father, Leonard Francois, gets so nervous he can not watch his daughter in action, but she credits him for her big-match mentality.

It was left for others to go beyond Williams' remarks to reporters and King, a pioneer in women's rights and sports, quickly stepped up.

But for me, I felt like I really had to focus during this match because she's such a great champion, and I know that she can come back from any point. "She deserved credit. She deserved to win", Williams said.

While Osaka was the better player on the day, the match will long be remembered for the weird turn it took during the second set when Williams unleashed a furious rant at chair umpire Carlos Ramos. "This is outrageous", said Williams, before leaving her press conference to applause.

The money comes out of her prize money of $1.85 million as the runner-up.

"This is outrageous", said Williams warming to her theme. "I know that everyone was cheering for [Serena] and I'm sorry it had to end like this. He's never taken a game from a man because they said 'thief'". I'm not sure if they were happy tears or they were just sad tears, because of the moment. "Odd to do that in a Grand Slam final", Mouratoglou said. But I've seen other men call other umpires several things.

Meanwhile, Mouratoglou took to Twitter to also take aim at Ramos. How many other men do things?

She will head to Tokyo from NY ahead of the Pan Pacific Open, beginning on September 17, and it is likely to be some homecoming for the player born in Japan but raised in the United States. To lose a game for saying that, it's not fair.
