Nolte: Bob Woodward Amps Up Scare Tactics to Hype Book

President Donald J. Trump delivers remarks from the White House

Cohn, who appears to have been an important source for the book, reportedly told Trump that printing huge amounts of money is seen as inflationary, but the president maintained an interest in the idea.

"Most significant, however, were the private reactions from House Speaker Ryan and Senate Majority Leader McConnell".

"They are not telling the truth", said.

Spokespeople for Ryan and McConnell both declined to comment to Business Insider about the reporting.

The White House on Monday sought to project an image of productive forward momentum, even as President Donald Trump and many of his aides remain sidetracked and preoccupied by dual accounts of a warring and mutinous West Wing.

In the book, Woodward cited an alleged phone conversation between Trump and Mattis in which Trump went into an expletive-laden rant against Assad and told Mattis to have him killed.

Trump tweeted Monday that he has been subjected to "Phony books, articles and T.V. "hits" like no other pol has had to endure".

In the normal practice of journalism, it's considered to be the job of a newspaper's own reporters, not anonymous government officials, to report on newsworthy political revelations, especially those with momentous implications.

US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, in turn, is quoted as saying the president has the mental capacity of a "fifth or sixth grader", while current chief of staff John Kelly is quoted as calling Trump "an idiot".

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said on Monday that the anonymous author of the New York Times op-ed that is searingly critical of Donald Trump's ability to be president, is "attempting to undermine the executive branch", and added that the US Department of Justice should "look into" the writer's identity.

During Today's exclusive interview with Woodward, the Watergate journalist called Trump "detached" from reality and a threat to national security.

The book has already risen to No. 1 on Amazon's best-seller list, but Trump said the longtime Washington Post reporter and editor used "now disproven unnamed and anonymous sources". Dems can't stand losing.

Trump talked about raising taxes on the rich repeatedly during his campaign for the presidency, and former Trump adviser Steven Bannon reportedly advocated for a top rate of 44 percent on people who earn more than $5 million a year as he pushed for a more populist version of the tax legislation.

What is most troubling, however, is Woodward's praise and obvious admiration for those who undermine a duly elected president by doing things like sneaking documents off his desk, by hiding stuff from him.

It was the first press briefing by Sanders in 19 busy, news-filled, over the course of which Sen. "I'll write the real book!"

Woodward gained journalistic fame almost five decades ago as one of the Postreporters whose investigative stories about White House corruption helped drive President Richard Nixon from office and now has written books about eight USA presidents.
