Is everything fine in the White House?

Donald Trump called the writer "gutless" and said the anonymous essay amounted to "treason". "His non-stop, self-centered leaking is why Steve was sacked from the White House in the first place", he added.

Woodward has said he stands by the reporting in his book, which offers a harrowing portrayal of Trump's tenure, with aides seeking to curb his worst impulses, and Trump denigrating some of those who work around him, including Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

But Woodward insisted his book was accurate and said he carefully vetted each description included in the book.

Bob Woodward's book on the Trump administration, "Fear: Trump in the White House", hits bookstores Tuesday but has been making headlines for about a week as details leak out.

Trump has dismissed the Woodward book as a "scam" filled with "made up" quotes. That allowed him to use the material, but not attribute it to the sources.

Woodward's book is based on "deep background" interviews, which he defines in his book as interviews where "all the information could be used but I would not say who provided it".

Woodward went on to say, "People who work for him are anxious. that he will sign things or give orders that threaten the national security or the financial security of the country, or of the world". Trump allegedly asked Christie about transition team funds.

"Just run the presses - print money", Trump said, according to Woodward, during a discussion on the national debt with Gary Cohn, former director of the White House National Economic Council.

"(Defense Secretary) James Mattis says we're doing this to prevent World War III", Woodward added. "Never has a country given so much away for so little in return" as the USA had in Afghanistan, Modi had said to Trump, according to The Washington Post.

Trump said the key was showing no hesitancy in denying accusations and instead, be on the attack and push back.

As part Trump's efforts to discredit Woodward on Monday, he wrote another tweet in which he quoted Washington Examiner reporter Katelyn Caralle as saying, "You can not take this book too seriously".

The Washington Post, which obtained an advance copy of the book by the veteran chronicler of modern presidents, reported Tuesday that Woodward describes Trump manically pressing his staff for actions that could lead to major conflict - leaving them little choice but to disregard his orders.

"As anyone who has worked for Trump knows and I think that establishes this also", Woodward told Perino, "that it's very hard to control Trump".

"People better wake up to what's going on", Woodward said of the White House during an interview about his new book on CBS News' "Sunday Morning".

"Well, the book is already out", he said.
