Judge rules Cosby a 'sexually violent predator'

Bill Cosby gestures as he arrives for his sentencing hearing at the Montgomery County Courthouse Tuesday Sept. 25 2018 in Norristown Pa

Bill Cosby has been sentenced to three to 10 years in prison for sexually assaulting a Canadian woman in 2004.

Tuesday's classification means he will need to register with state police and notify any community he lives in of his sex offender status, as well as undergo mandatory counselling for life.

His name will appear on a sex-offender registry sent to neighbours, schools and victims.

Among other things, Wyatt said all three of the psychologists who testified against Cosby were "white women who make money off of accusing black men of being sexual predators", and he accused prosecutors of using a doctored recording of a telephone conversation between Constand's mother and Cosby.

Cosby, a once towering figure in late 20th century American popular culture and the first black actor to grace primetime USA television, risks a maximum sentence of up to 10 years behind bars.

Judge Steven O'Neill has also denied Cosby's request for bail pending appeal.

Before handing down the prison sentence, Judge O'Neill also made a decision to designate Cosby a "sexually violent predator" under Pennsylvania law.

"All I'm asking for is justice as the court sees fit", Constand told the court on Monday. "As she [Constand] said, Mr. Cosby, you took her attractive, healthy young spirit and crushed it".

In the statement, she described herself before the assault as a young, strong woman looking forward to a future with bright possibilities.

She was one of five "prior bad acts" witnesses who testified at the criminal trial that Cosby had incapacitated and then assaulted them without their consent.

Bill Cosby victim Andrea Constand, who's led the charge against the disgraced comedian, submitted a victim-impact statement at Cosby's sentencing on Monday.

She testified that she took three blue pills Cosby offered her during a visit to his home outside Philadelphia in early 2004 because she trusted Cosby and believed they were some kind of an herbal relaxant. And during the two-day hearing, a psychologist for the state argued that Cosby would likely re-offend if given the opportunity.

Constand smiled when Cosby's sentence was read. Cosby's attorney Tom Mesereau promised to appeal, saying at the time "The fight is not over".

"It was very touching", Feden said of that credit from her superior. "The sight of the man who drugged and sexually assaulted me coming into the basketball office filled me with dread". Cosby declined to participate in the evaluation by Dudley, who said she came to her determination by reviewing trial transcripts and other reports.

Cosby's wife, Camille, has not been present at the sentencing.

Cosby's lawyers asked for house arrest, saying Cosby - who is legally blind - is too old and vulnerable to do time in prison.

The proceedings took place as women and others across the USA protested against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, who faces allegations of sexual misconduct by two women. And he ordered Cosby to go to prison immediately.

Bill Cosby faces a good chance of being sent to prison Tuesday when a judge is expected to sentence the TV star who was convicted of drugging and sexually assaulting a woman. - Statement from Hollywood Walk of Fame on why Cosby's star will remain.
