Osaka beats Strycova to reach semifinals at Pan Pacific Open

Naomi Osaka upset by Karolina Pliskova in Toray Pan Pacific Open final

Pliskova won over Naomi Osaka of Japan in the final.

The U.S. Open champion, who upset Serena Williams in the final in NY at the beginning of the month, won her ninth straight match Friday, beating Barbora Strycova 6-3, 6-4. She will next play Donna Vekic, who beat second-seeded Caroline Garcia 6-3, 6-4.

Wuhan Open organisers confirmed Osaka's withdrawal due to a viral illness on their Twitter page.

"I was just trying to serve well, to mix the speed a little bit (and) play lots to her backhand". She broke Vekic twice early on to lead 4-0 and went on to win the set 6-2.

Osaka's victory in front of an expectant home crowd was her 10th in a row and did not look in doubt from the moment the world number seven pounded down a huge ace with her first serve of the match. "She was missing quite a lot today and it was working, so I didn't change anything".

Wang Qiang (+7, No.41 to No.34): A second title inside two months took the Chinese player to her highest ranking yet as she added the Guangzhou title to her trophy in Nanchang in July. "I feel like I'm improving in every match, but the opponents are always tougher".

"It was another long one today!" "The chances of me playing in the next tournament are very low".

"Because if you set a really high goal, than normally, for me at least, I tend to overwhelm myself".

Klizan, the 2012 champion here, won in 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 in two hours 16 minutes to chalk up his first win over the 33-year-old Wawrinka in their fourth head-to-head meeting.

"I'm going to do my best to win the title here".

Former world No. 1 Karolina Pliskova stunned Japanese tennis sensation Naomi Osaka in straight sets to capture the Pan Pacific Open yesterday.

On his own serve, Wawrinka did not even allow Klizan to reach deuce until the sixth game of the second set. Klizan went on to take the set. Wawrinka quickly broke but 29-year-old Slovak produced the deciding break in the 11th game to win the set and the match.

Tomljanovic in the semi-finals of the singles on Saturday ousted Taiwan's Hsieh Su-wei, who nonetheless made a final, pairing up with sister Hsieh Shu-ying against South Korean duo Choi Ji-hee and Han Na-lae in the doubles.
