Rosenstein May Keep His Job, Unless His Trump Meeting Goes Awry

Rod Rosenstein Has Verbally Resigned To John Kelly

"He said he doesn't believe it".

"Not wanting to fire Rod Rosenstein is consistent with what I have understood for weeks, not just days", said Rep. Mark Meadows, a North Carolina Republican who talks to Trump often.

"I hope the Justice Department saw that, Bret Stephens", Wallace said.

There had been widespread speculation that Trump would fire Rosenstein since Friday when a New York Times report said that in 2017 Rosenstein had suggested secretly recording the president and recruiting Cabinet members to invoke a constitutional amendment to remove him from office.

After Rosenstein's much-publicized meeting Monday at the White House, Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Rosenstein had spoken to Mr. Trump on the phone and would meet with him in person when the president returned from NY.

Trump added, "My preference would be to keep him and to let him finish up".

Rosenstein will be meeting with President Trump directly on Thursday, after which, well, anything can happen.

Trump also revealed he may call Rosenstein tonight or tomorrow to delay the meeting, saying "I don't want to do anything that gets in the way" of a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing featuring testimony from Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford, who has accused the judge of sexually assaulting her during a party in high school. And while many of Trump's allies have urged caution, fearing a trap, moments ago Axios reported that Rosenstein has made a decision to preempt that step by verbally resigning to Chief of Staff John Kelly in anticipation of being fired by President Trump, according to a source with direct knowledge.

Bret Stephens, a New York Times columnist, argued on MSNBC's "Deadline: White House" with host Nicolle Wallace Tuesday that the outcome of this meeting could have massive implications for the future of the country.

They have scourged Rosenstein over his role supervising the ongoing Russian Federation investigation, which Trump also broached in his press conference on Wednesday.

It wasn't clear whether Trump will place any demands on Rosenstein at the meeting, such as asking him to recuse himself from overseeing Mueller's probe, a person familiar with the matter said.

Rosenstein's friends and former colleagues describe him as exceptionally committed to the Justice Department - one said he "bleeds" for the agency - and unlikely to leave on his own, though they say he respects the chain of command enough to resign if asked.
