Trump says he rejected meeting with Canada's Trudeau

President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he rejected a meeting request from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau amid a bitter renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement, also known as NAFTA.

Trump also cast serious doubt on ongoing NAFTA negotiations, raising issues with "the negotiating style of Canada".

Lighthizer said Tuesday that the administration will immediately submit the text of a U.S. -Mexico deal to Congress if Canada does not sign on by then.

He took aim at the country's dairy tariffs and reiterated his threat to tax Canada's auto industry.

Canada's Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland has spent much of the last month in Washington for talks with US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and repeatedly commented on the progress being made and the goodwill in the negotiations.

President Trump said Wednesday he was planning to impose severe economic penalties against Canada if it does not agree to major changes in its trade policies.

The price of oil, one of Canada's major exports, eased after USA data showed a surprise build in domestic crude inventories.

Trump said Wednesday that Trudeau had sought a meeting with him during the United Nations General Assembly in NY, but Trump refused to participate because he doesn't like how Canada was approaching the trade discussions. "Canada has treated us very badly".

He did not rule out the possibility of a deal, but made it clear he had little interest in compromising. Canada's dairy market has remained largely closed to the U.S. ever since American dairy farmers were caught excessively dumping products inside of Canada's markets several decades ago.

"We'll see where it goes, but so far it's been tough", he said.

Returning to criticizing Canada, he ripped America's neighbor to the north for a long-imposed tariff of almost 300 percent on some dairy products.

President Trump suggested that a potential U.S. -Mexico-Canada trade deal could be called USMC.

Earlier in September, Trump tweeted that there is "no political necessity to keep Canada in the new NAFTA deal".

"We're going to go ahead with Mexico", he added. He's threatened to withdraw from the existing Nafta deal entirely.

"I don't like NAFTA".

A source told the National Post Wednesday that Jared Kushner had been trying to orchestrate a last-minute summit between Trump, his father-in-law, and Trudeau in the hope of breaking logjams in the trade talks.

'We think their negotiators have taken advantage of our country for a long time, ' he said. The deal will "probably or possibly" be a deal with just Mexico, he added.
