Experienced Sex-Crimes Prosecutor to Question Kavanaugh and Ford as Vote Announced

Kavanaugh Vote Is Scheduled for Friday Now; Grassley Vows No More Delays

Rachel Mitchell, a sex crimes prosecutor in Maricopa County, Arizona, who questioned Ford today, went out on what seems to be a unusual tangent about the polygraph that Ford took in August.

Democrats and Kavanaugh opponents were criticizing Mitchell for approaching Ford as a prosecutor would when Ford is the accuser, and they didn't like some of her lines of questioning. Senate Judiciary Republicans did not provide a comparable experience to the man accused of that assault.

Blasey Ford claims she was a victim of sexual assault by Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh when they were teenagers. Mitchell is expected to be given much - if not all - of the five minutes of GOP question time per senator.

Mitchell "has been recognized in the legal community for her experience and objectivity", committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, a Republican from Iowa, said in a statement Tuesday.

One friend, Adela Gildo-Mazzon, said Ford told her in June 2013 that she had nearly been raped when she was much younger by someone who is now a federal judge. She asked about the party at which the alleged assault occurred, about the neighborhood where it might have taken place and its relationship to Ford's own home. She laid out guidelines for the hearing, then began asking Ford about five different pieces of information from the summer and fall, when Ford sought to share her story with elected officials and with the Washington Post.

Amid Mitchell's questioning, Steve Schmidt, an anti-Trump, former Republican operative who ran the late Sen. She studied law at Arizona State University, passing the bar in 1992, and since 1993 has worked as a prosecutor. She supervises attorneys who handle cases involving child molestation, sexual assault and computer crimes against children in Arizona's most populous county. Her most prominent case - to date - came in 2005, when she prosecuted the Rev Paul LeBrun, a former Catholic priest accused of molesting six boys in Arizona during the 1980s and 1990s.

Rachel Mitchell is a deputy Maricopa County attorney and chief of their sex crimes division. LeBrun was found guilty in 2005 of sexually abusing young boys and sentenced to 111 years in prison, according to the Arizona Republic.

"It struck me how innocent and vulnerable the victims of these cases really were". People think that children would tell right away and that they would tell everything that happened to them.

Mitchell helped create the first-ever sex-crimes protocol for the county attorney office's that was introduced a year ago. Observers blame a lack of time, poor strategy, and an inherent conflict between the work that Mitchell has done for a quarter century and the task she was given on Thursday.

He also noted that she's not a politician and will now be in the spotlight: "It can throw your game off", Romley said. They should have called all the witnesses she mentioned to deny on record that they recall such a party (particularly Mark Judge, whom they spoke with but who was not subpoenaed). "She just doesn't look at anything politically".
