Donald Trump: 'Scary time for young men' in US

Supreme Court

"On one of the last occasions I purposely socialized with Brett, I witnessed him respond to a semi-hostile remark, not by defusing the situation, but by throwing his beer in the man's face and starting a fight that ended with one of our mutual friends in jail", Ludington alleges in the statement.

"What message that sends to women in America is that we are innocent until proven guilty in this country", said Ernst. "Whatever that means according to the senators and the Republicans and the Republican majority, I want them to do that".

"You know what? They are not angels", he said.

Senator Jeff Flake, a moderate Republican who could be pivotal in the confirmation vote, raised concerns about the judge's "partisan" tone at the Judiciary Committee hearing.

New Haven Police Officer David Hartman speaks to reporters, October 2, 2018, in New Haven, Conn., about a 1985 police report involving Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. Kavanaugh has also denied her accusations, as well as those of two other women, while accusing Democrats of a political "hit".

He wasn't. The man in question was then-21-year-old Dom Cozzolino, who was bleeding from the ear as a result of the altercation.

[Ludington] said that the altercation happened after a UB40 concert on September 25, when he and a group of people went to Demery's and were drinking pints.

The White House noted that Kavanaugh wasn't arrested or charged and questioned the incident's relevance.

His attorney, Barbara "Biz" Van Gelder, wouldn't say Tuesday when the interview concluded or what Judge was asked.

Prof Ford has testified that Mr Kavanaugh assaulted her as a teenager.

He also heaped praise on his nominee, who is the subject of an ongoing Federal Bureau of Investigation probe into charges publicly aired last week by Christine Blasey Ford, a California college professor who said a drunken Kavanaugh pinned her to a bed and groped her at the party.

University professor Christine Blasey Ford has said Judge was a witness when Kavanaugh allegedly sexually assaulted her at a party in 1982 when they were high school students in Maryland.

Kavanaugh and Judge have vehemently denied all the allegations. To that, Trump said it is not "acceptable" to lie to Congress.

As the investigation of past actions continues, lawmakers in both parties are parsing Kavanaugh's testimony from last week.

"The mudslide was cheered on and capitalized on at every turn by the far left that has been so eager to stop this nomination", he said.

McConnell says Democrats are practicing the politics of personal destruction. McConnell has said the Senate will be voting on Kavanaugh this week. Kavanaugh denies all the claims, and disputes the idea that he was an aggressive drunk.

Schumer said Kavanaugh seemed willing to "mislead senators about everything from the momentous to the mundane" to ensure his confirmation.

But Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, chairman of the Judiciary Committee, said Kavanaugh could be excused for showing passion. Joe Manchin's campaign office in Charleston and were charged early Tuesday.

Among the allegations McConnell criticized was one brought by a "tabloid lawyer" he did not name whose client has alleged she was victimized at a party attended by Kavanaugh friends and for which "there conveniently happened to be zero witnesses".

"Today, Judge Kavanaugh indicated that he can no longer commit to teaching his course in January Term 2019", Associate Dean Catherine Claypoole wrote in an email obtained by The Harvard Crimson.

A Harvard Law School spokesperson confirmed Kavanaugh's decision to The Associated Press on Tuesday.

Sitting Supreme Court Justices often teach courses affiliated with universities during the summer months. He has taught at the law school for about a decade.

President Trump has said he wants the FBI to conduct a "very comprehensive investigation" into sexual assault allegations against his Supreme Court nominee - but not a "witch hunt".

It's not now clear whether the Republican leadership has secured enough votes to ensure Judge Kavanaugh's confirmation.

Flake, who pushed for a delay for the FBI to investigate the assault allegations, said he was keeping an open mind on the nomination. Add Supreme Court as an interest to stay up to date on the latest Supreme Court news, video, and analysis from ABC News.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell accused Democrats of trying to derail the nomination on Monday, declaring: "The time for endless delay and obstruction has come to a close". The Judiciary Committee had a closed hearing to review the previous background checks into Kavanaugh after the initial public hearings for him last month.
