US, N Korea make progress on nuclear issue : Pompeo

Trump and Kim held an historic first summit in Singapore in June.

Pompeo has repeatedly refused to discuss details of negotiations, including a US position on North Korea's demand for a declared end to the Korean War and a proposal from Seoul for such a declaration to be accompanied by a shutdown of the North's main known nuclear facility.

"It is unlikely he will get into the necessary negotiating to make progress on reducing the wide chasm between the U.S".

"A verifiable shutdown of Yongbyon would make it harder for North Korea to further expand its fissile stockpile" and "create momentum for further action-for-action steps, and help buy time for the long and difficult steps on the road toward denuclearization", Daryl Kimball, executive director of the Arms Control Association, said in a statement, adding that an end-of-war declaration would also "ease tensions, build confidence, and in no way adversely affect the very strong U.S".

Pompeo also pledged that during his meeting with Kim on Sunday, he would raise the cases of Japanese citizens abducted by North Korea. On Wednesday, he said there was unanimous support for this at last week's U.N. General Assembly, even if Russian Federation and China "had some ideas about how we might begin to think about a time when it would be appropriate to reduce them". "We are not quite there yet". Trump canceled Pompeo's initial planned return to North Korea last month. DPRK is the acronym for the country's official name: Democratic People's Republic of Korea. "We are not even talking about whether to do it or not", he said.

"Secretary Pompeo said there had been discussions on denuclearization measures to be taken by North Korea and monitoring by the USA government, as well as on corresponding measures to be taken by the United States", Yoon said.

"Kim Jong Un expressed satisfaction over the productive and wonderful talks with Mike Pompeo at which mutual stands were fully understood and opinions exchanged", North Korean news agency KCNA said.

Later Kim said, "It's a very nice day that promises a good future" for both countries. Japan has been wary of the initiative, but South Korea has embraced it.

Today's visit will thus likely aim to fix damaged bilateral ties while reaffirming a commitment to North Korean denuclearisation-the general objective of Mr Pompeo's tour.

Both Koreas have differed with the United States on North Korea's nuclear program.

With talks largely deadlocked, at the heart of this round of negotiations is a debate over what the US should demand from North Korea and what it is willing to give in exchange.

Pompeo, however, played down the differences. "And so there'll be tactical places where we'll have debates and disagreements, that is a necessary component of getting to the best deliverable". "So this is, I think, a good outcome for all of us".

On Sunday, State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert said in a statement that "Chairman Kim invited inspectors to visit the Punggye Ri nuclear test site to confirm that it has been irreversibly dismantled". It has not taken any steps to halt nuclear weapons or missile development.

The North also has accused Washington of making "unilateral and gangster-like" demands on denuclearisation and insisted that sanctions should be lifted before any progress in nuclear talks.

The North has committed to taking additional denuclearization steps, such as shutting down its long-range missile engine test site and launching pad in Dongchang-ri on the west coast in the presence of worldwide inspectors and closing its main Yongbyon nuclear complex should the US take "corresponding measures".

The two had "refined options" for a location and date of a second summit without offering specifics, the State Department statement said.

Pompeo said he and Kim discussed denuclearization steps to be taken by the North and the issue of US government monitoring of those actions, which Washington sees as vital, as well as the measures the United States would conduct in return, Moon's office said.
