Wife says Interpol chief sent knife image as danger signal

Meng Hongwei disappeared last month after travelling from France to China

Interpol says a Chinese official who was reported missing has resigned as head of the worldwide police agency.

The Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, the Chinese Communist Party's secretive internal investigation agency, had no announcements on its website about Meng and could not be reached for comment.

Meng's wife had contacted police in Lyon, the French city where the global police agency is based, and reported Meng missing, after not hearing from him since September 25. It did not say why.

Meng's disappearance was originally reported by his wife, who told French police in the city of Lyon she had not heard from him since he travelled to China.

The disciplinary organ of China's ruling Communist Party said in a brief statement on its website, Meng was "suspected of violating the law and is now under the monitoring and investigation" of China's new anti-corruption body, the National Supervision Commission.

His duties in China would have put him in close proximity to former leaders, some who fell foul of President Xi Jinping's sweeping anti-corruption campaign.

A brief statement from the Chinese anti-graft body said: "Public Security Ministry Vice Minister Meng Hongwei is now under investigation by the National Supervisory Commission for suspected violations of law".

Grace Meng detailed the last messages she exchanged with her husband, Interpol President Meng Hongwei, to reporters as part of her unusual appeal.

It comes as authorities in China said the Interpol president is under investigation on suspicion of breaking the law.

Interpol said the senior vice president of its executive committee, Kim Jong Yang of South Korea, would become acting president.

Speaking to reporters Sunday in France, Meng´s wife said she feared that her husband´s life was in danger.

Meng's wife, Grace Meng, reported him missing to French authorities on Thursday after she hadn't seen him for 10 days and had received threats, including a text message with an image of a knife.

She added: "This is a matter for the worldwide community".

Interpol has acknowledged reports about Meng's disappearance, and said in an email that it "is a matter for the relevant authorities in both France and China".

'His job is very busy, ' she said.

She said he had travelled back to China for work, after a visit to the Nordics.

The agency's secretary general Juergen Stock, who oversees day-to-day operations, had said Saturday that it was seeking "clarification" on his whereabouts from Chinese authorities.

During Meng's tenure, Interpol issued a red notice for fugitive Chinese billionaire real estate tycoon Guo Wengui, who threatened to reveal corruption at the country's highest levels.

Meng's vanishing act bears hallmarks of what happens to senior officials when they are suspected of violating party rules, usually alleged corruption.
