Google is shutting down Google

Google+ mobile

Google found up to 438 apps that used this API and 496,951 users may have been affected by this bug.

The company stated in its post that there was no evidence "that any developer was aware of this bug, or. that any Profile data was misused".

Google is now shuttering Google+ as a delayed response.

"The consumer version of Google+ now has low usage and engagement: 90% of Google+ user sessions are less than five seconds".

Following this incident, the software giant has now decided that it will shut down Google+ operations for the consumers, however, it will remain as a product for enterprise users.

After performing a code review of the Google+ APIs, called Project Strobe, Google stated they discovered a bug that could leak the private information of Google+ accounts.

Android data access is being restricted to app developers. The non-public information that was accessible includes an account holder's name, email address, occupation, gender and age.

"It has not achieved broad consumer or developer adoption, and has seen limited user interaction with apps", wrote Ben Smith, Google's vice president of engineering, in a blog post on Monday. "That means we can not confirm which users were impacted by this bug".

Google did not make it clear if the experiment was a success and we'll see the functionality of Reply in other Google apps and services - or if the Reply experiment was a dud and Google is just sweeping it under the rug. The bug was patched in March 2018, but Google didn't inform users at that point.

When people found out about it, it chose to shut down Google+ in a knee-jerk reaction.

Google said it would continue to offer private Google+ powered networks for businesses now using the software. Data security experts now estimate 500,000 users had their profile data exposed.

The bug was discovered in March 2018. According to their reporting, an internal committee at Google decided not to disclose the bug even though they were not 100% sure that it was not abused. The Wall Street Journal reports the company didn't reveal what had happened "in part because of fears that doing so would draw regulatory scrutiny and cause reputational damage".

According to The Australian, the Office will be seeking to find out the depth of the breach and how numerous 496,951 users affected by the breach were Australian.
