Saudi consulate to be searched for missing journalist Jamal Khashoggi

Canada concerned over reports Saudi journalist killed - The Jakarta Post

The Saudi consulate in Istanbul issued a statement Sunday, saying reports that Kashoggi was murdered inside the building were "baseless allegations".

Khashoggi has criticized Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in his writings. The wealthy former government insider had been living in the United States in self-imposed exile.

Jamal Khashoggi has not been seen since he entered the building last week. Saudi officials have denied the report and say they don't know the journalist's whereabouts.

On his first worldwide trip as president, Mr Trump visited Saudi Arabia and announced 110 billion dollars in proposed arms sales.

Saudi officials insist he left through one of the consulate's doors.

Turan Kislakci, the head of the Turkish-Arab Media Association, told The New York Times that Turkish officers did not see Khashoggi leave when they monitored their surveillance cameras.

The Tennessee Republican, who chairs the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, says he has also spoken with the Saudi ambassador to the U.S. Trump visited Saudi Arabia on his first worldwide trip as president and announced $110 billion in proposed arms sales.

OSMAN ORSAL/REUTERS/NewscomNearly a week after the Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi disappeared, suspicions are rising that the regime in Riyadh has silenced him. He's gone missing after entering a Saudi consulate in Turkey. A Saudi-led coalition has been at war with Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthi rebels since March 2015.

A combo of frame grabs taken off a police CCTV video made available through the Turkish Newspaper Sabah, allegedly shows members of a group of Saudi citizens that Turkish police suspect of being involved in the disappearance of Khashoggi at Istanbul's Ataturk airport.

Trump on Monday expressed concern about Khashoggi's case and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called for a thorough investigation.

Jamal Khashoggi's story is still evolving and has grabbed news headlines around the world. The White House must respond within 120 days, setting out what actions it proposes to take.Trump told Fox News in an interview on Wednesday night that "so far it's looking a little bit like" the Saudis are behind Khashoggi's disappearance but said it was too early to say how the U.S. might respond.

Saudi officials said he left shortly afterwards but his fiancee, who was waiting outside, said he never came out.

Trump isn't providing any details on an investigation. The Washington Post reported USA intelligence services intercepted communications of Saudi officials, discussing a plan to lure him back to the kingdom. Blocking further arms sales to Saudi Arabia "would be hurting us", he said.

But the disappearance of the journalist, however prominent, may not affect President Trump's bet on the Saudi heir to the throne.

"We'll have a report out soon" on the disappearance of the journalist, Jamal Khashoggi, Trump told reporters at the White House on Thursday.

US President Donald Trump has also demanded answers over his fate. But Trump is expressing reservations over calls to withhold further USA arms sales to Saudi Arabia.

"Forced disappearances are cases against human rights and we are here to condemn this crime committed against a journalist", Yurtsever said.
