Trump demands Saudis explain missing journalist

Turkish sources believe Jamal Khashoggi was killed inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul

US President Donald Trump increased pressure on Saudi Arabia on Wednesday to provide information on what happened to missing Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi and said he wanted to get the bottom of what he called "a very serious situation".

Khashoggi was last seen on October 2 when he entered the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul to pick up some paperwork. This could lead to sanctions against Saudi Arabia within 120 days.

"Is it possible there were no camera systems in a consulate, in an embassy?"

"We're demanding everything", Trump told reporters.

Corker said that when he had asked for the CCTV footage inside the consulate, the Saudi ambassador had claimed that there was no footage because "they only livestream their tapes".

News of Saudi Arabia orchestrating the assassination of Khashoggi has put further pressure on its ally the United States to take action.

The issue threatened the strong relationship the Trump administration has constructed with Mohammed Bin Salman.

"I would normally prefer not to address such outrageous claims, especially when it concerns the well-being of a missing citizen who dedicated a great portion of his life to serve his country", Khalid bin Salman said in a statement.

In a reversal from Washington's initial low-key response, Trump demanded answers after he spoke to Saudi authorities "at the highest level".

She added: "Although this incident could potentially fuel a political crisis between the two nations, let us not lose sight of the human aspect of what happened".

Donald Trump, the U.S. president, said he had raised Mr Khashoggi's case with Saudi Arabia "at the highest level" and a few times in recent days.

The wealthy former government insider had been living in the United States in self-imposed exile.

Khashoggi, 59, who was once close to the Saudi royal family and has served as an adviser for senior Saudi officials, left the country previous year to live in the U.S. in self-imposed exile, saying he feared retribution for his criticism of Saudi policy in the Yemen war and its crackdown on dissent.

The intelligence pointing to a plan to detain Khashoggi in Saudi Arabia has fueled speculation by officials and analysts in multiple countries that what transpired at the consulate was a backup plan to capture Khashoggi that may have gone wrong.

"It is not right to draw conclusions based on guesses, however we are concerned".

Turkey has backed Qatar in its dispute with Saudi Arabia and its neighbors.

Citing US intelligence intercepts of Saudi officials discussing the matter, the American daily - to which Khashoggi contributed as a columnist - reported Wednesday that details of the operation bore the hallmarks of a "rendition". Khashoggi was skeptical of such offers.

TV channels broadcast videos of what they said were the men arriving at the airport and checking into hotels, as well as footage of vehicle traffic outside the consulate before and after Khashoggi's disappearance, including a black van with blacked out windows that the police find suspicious.

Turkish police investigating the disappearance of Jamal Khashoggi believe he was killed inside the consulate by 15 Saudis who visited October 2, and left the country the same day.

Whatever took place, Corker said, "there was Saudi involvement" and "everything points to them".

After images of the men and their names were published by pro-government Sabah daily, media identified a lot of them as senior figures in Riyadh or close to the crown prince.

Turkish security officials were working to identify the 15 individuals, English-language state broadcaster TRT World reported, adding that Turkish officials believe the Saudis may have taken the consulate's CCTV footage with them when they returned to Riyadh.
