What Latest Assessment On Global Warming Means for Southern Africa

Animated chart showing that most of the coldest 10 years compared to the 20th century average were in the early 1900s while the warmest years have all been since 2000 with 2018 on course to be the fourth warmest year on record

The IPCC report says that we'll have to do nearly everything possible to reach the goal.

The report finds that limiting global warming to 1.5°C would require "rapid and far-reaching" transitions in land, energy, industry, buildings, transport, and cities. The first announced the latest report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The challenge of restricting the rise to 1.5 deg C came mainly from almost 60 small island countries who in reality are facing their existential threat due to sea level rise driven by global warming.

The 1.5 report and its SPM were finally commissioned by governments following the 2015 global climate talks in Paris. Politicians are fond of talking about what kind of future we will leave our grandchildren, but I can now say that having a grandchild sharpens that perspective dramatically. This is especially notable considering that the "intensity, frequency and duration" of North Atlantic hurricanes, as well as the frequency of Category 4 and 5 hurricanes (the strongest classifications), have been on the rise since the 1980s, with hurricane intensity and rainfall projected to increase as global warming continues, the National Climate Assessment wrote.

Some of the impacts will still be severe regardless, but some plant and animal life can actually stand a chance of survival with a lower level of warming, according to examples in the report. In other words, we had more growth and less pollution - the best of all worlds.

Jacqueline Spence, Jamaica's climate change focal point for the IPCC, who was present at the meeting held in Korea last week, agreed. He added that Vietnam has issued a plan for the Implementation of the Paris Climate Change Agreement, with a focus on implementing its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC).

More than 60 leading climate scientists and health experts, majority from Washington state, are urging support for a carbon fee on the November ballot. In the summary for policymakers, the section that receives the most attention, it does not mention population displacements or conflict, he said.

- The West Antarctic ice sheet might not kick into irreversible melting.

To contain warming at 1.5°C, man-made global net Carbon dioxide emissions needs to fall by about 45 percent by 2030 from 2010 levels and reach "net zero" by mid-century. To prevent massive disruption, we need to nearly completely retool our global economy in about 12 years. A rise in temperatures can lead to far more deaths in the summer heat. If there was a global increase in temperature of just 2 degrees Celsius, it would spell widespread disaster and the world may only have 12 years left.

The need was supported by the emergent historic Paris Agreement, which reflect the commitment to "holding the increase in the global average temperature to well below 28C above pre-industrial levels and pursuing efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels". The world is filled with climate-change hypocrites who want America to pay all the costs and make all the sacrifices. Leaders from countries such as Botswana and Namibia can not let-up on the global stage in pushing for nation states to make good on, and further improve, their pledges to cut greenhouse gas emissions in line with the Paris Agreement. "Within a few generations he is burning the fossil fuels that slowly accumulated in the earth over the past 500 million years".

"With more than 6,000 scientific references cited and the dedicated contribution of thousands of expert and government reviewers worldwide, this important report testifies to the breadth and policy relevance of the IPCC", said Hoesung Lee, Chair of the IPCC.
