Trump says 'rogue killers' may be behind Khashoggi disappearance

According to that reported claim, the crown prince had approved an interrogation or rendition of Khashoggi back to Saudi Arabia, but the intelligence official was tragically incompetent as he eagerly sought to prove himself.

A Turkish diplomatic source had earlier said a joint Turkish-Saudi team would search the building - the last place Khashoggi was seen before he vanished on October 2.

Saudi Arabia is preparing a report that would admit Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi was killed as the result of an interrogation that went wrong, CNN reported yesterday, citing two unnamed sources.

President Donald Trump told reporters Monday that he was aware of the report but did not know if it was correct.

Trump suggested that "rogue killers" could be responsible.

"The Republic of Yemen expressed its deep appreciation for the high prestige enjoyed by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which makes it the cornerstone of the security and stability of the Arab and Islamic worlds, as well as stability of the region", read the statement, attributed to Yemen's state news agency Saba. JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon, KKR executive David Petraeus and Ford Motor Chairman Bill Ford have also said that they will not attend the Saudi event.

"It sounded to me like maybe these could have been rogue killers".

"I actually think we'd be punishing ourselves if we did that", Trump told reporters, referring to cancelling the arms deal.

Trump said that he had invited Khashoggi's fiancee, Hatice Cengiz, to visit him at the White House and that his staff was working out arrangements with her.

Turkish authorities said they have evidence proving that Khashoggi was killed by Saudi agents, while Riyadh officials have claimed the journalist was alive when he left the building and they don't know what happened to him.

The 58-year-old journalist and Washington Post contributor has been missing since he entered the Saudi consulate to gather documents for marriage last week.

Hours prior, President Trump announced in a tweet that he spoke with Saudi Arabia's King Salman about Khashoggi.

In an apparent response to Trump's comments, a Saudi official said if any moves were taken against the kingdom "it will respond with greater action".

Asian stocks bounced modestly on Tuesday, gaining a toe-hold after a week of heavy losses, although increasing tensions between Saudi Arabia and the West fanned geopolitical concerns and capped gains. The interrogation was meant to lead to his abduction from Turkey, the news channel said citing two unnamed sources.

Prince Mohammed has aggressively pitched the kingdom as a destination for foreign investment.

Trump has not described what punishment Saudi Arabia might face.

Pointing out that Russia and China were ready to step in, he added that "no one can deny that repercussions of these sanctions will include a Russian military base in Tabuk, northwest of Saudi Arabia, in the heated four corners of Syria, Israel, Lebanon and Iraq".
