Warner, Smith Bans Will Stand, CA Says Australia Ahead of India Series

The ball-tampering incident shocked Australia and led to 12-month suspensions for team leaders Steve Smith and David Warner, and a nine-month ban for batsman Cameron Bancroft.

Matthews, a board member for the Australian Cricketers Association focusing on retired players' futures, said he was shocked at how little past Test players had done to better cricket's deteriorating culture.

Should bans for Steve Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft be lifted or softened?

"This, we believe, is hugely significant".

'Basic fairness demands these independently verified contributing factors must now be taken into consideration and the penalties reduced'.

Steve Smith and David Warner came under plenty of fire over the ball tampering scandal but may now have an avenue to appeal their bans.

The reviews found the administrators were as much to blame as the players for the ball-tampering scandal that drove the game into crisis during the March tour of South Africa.

Cricket Australia chairman David Peever and new CEO Kevin Roberts have the task of turning things around.

The review, to be made public on Monday, handed down a number of recommendations including the creation of an ethics commission to look at the governance of the game, and the establishment of a cricket council to discuss major issues in Australian cricket.

"The Responsibility for that larger picture lies with CA and not just the players held directly responsible for the appalling incident at Newlands", said the review, which was released on Monday.

Australia's former bowling coach Craig McDermott joined ex-coach Darren Lehmann in arguing that Cricket Australia must soften the bans.

Bancroft only has two months left to serve, while Smith and Warner were senior figures in a plan hatched to brazenly cheat at worldwide level.

"I think the sanctions were probably too harsh and they should be allowed to play domestic cricket at least", he said.

Words such as arrogant, dictatorial, controlling, disrespectful, and hypocritical were used to describe the culture that festered within Australian cricket.

"It details a corporate culture which is as bad as I've seen in 30 years in the corporate world", he said. "I think the Australian public wants that and that would be good for cricket".

Bancroft infamously hid the sandpaper down his pants when television cameras caught him scuffing the surface of the ball, and then captain Steve Smith's evasive answers at a press conference dragged his team further into the mire.

"Players feel that they are treated as commodities".

With the findings of the independent review into the culture of Australian Cricket now out in the open, many have begun to ask questions as to why officials at Cricket Australia have seemed to escape any punishment.

Australia paceman Josh Hazlewood says CA's stance on the banned trio should be accepted.
